It is the question underneath all the other questions. Not beneath them in order. Beneath them in weight. The others can be finished. This one is the thing that does the finishing.
i.the shape
You have been asked this without being asked. By the look of a child. By an old photograph. By a hand that doesn't quite fit its glove. By the silence after the alarm. By the moment, in the middle of laughing, when you suddenly know you are a person doing the laughing.
The question is not a sentence. It is a shape you cannot see from inside.
ii.other ways to ask
- What am I, that I can ask?
- What is this thing, that knows itself?
- How strange, to be a person.
- Who is the I that is asking?
- What does it mean, to mean?
- To be, what must that be?
iii.a few small answers, considered
- I think, therefore I am. That is how, not what. A door, not the room.
- I am what I do. That is who, not what. A habit, not the hand.
- I am my relationships. That is where, not what. A weather, not the sky.
- I am the story I tell myself. That is how, not what. A dream, not the dreamer.
- I am my body. That is the vessel, not the question. A boat, not the sea.
None of these are wrong. None is the answer either. Each is a window. None is the wall.
iv.the asking itself
If there is an answer, it is not a sentence. It is the quality of attention you bring to the question across a long life. It is the kind of person you become by refusing to pretend you have already settled it.
The question is not in the way of living. It is a kind of living. The way a garden is a kind of attention. The way a long walk is a kind of thinking. The way a song is a kind of breath.
v.return
And then the question returns. It was always there. It will be there after you stop asking it. The older you get, the quieter it gets, the more it sounds like your own name being called from very far away.
